Surendra Kumar, 55, sings as well as plays the harmonium. He developed an interest in music while he was in school. In 4th class, he got the chance to play the harmonium and this sparked his interest in music. His father is his inspiration who is also a singer. His father, Roshan Lal was also his teacher who taught him to play the harmonium. He believes that culture is one thing that one should not separate itself from. He can’t imagine a world without music. He believes that music comes first, not only because it brings money but it makes joy in life. He does some other jobs as well to supplement his earnings which he claims is very less. He says that during the rainy season the number of programmes the group gets is very less so it is problematic for all the folk musician. During summers, there are more shows which they save to compliment them for the coming months. He wishes that he and his group gets more and more opportunities so that the music further grows and the folk musician gets more platform to show their talent.
