This song describes the festival of “Teej”, a monsoon festival celebrated in northern parts of India and women, where they gather and sing songs dedicated to the rains, celebrated by playing on the swing. In this playful song, women talk among themselves as they wait for their men to come back to them.

Lyrics –

Baalam ji mhaara sahaab ji mhaara jhirmir barse megh indo saawan ru hindo bade layi saakhein, baalam ji mhaara
(In the opening, the woman addresses her man using various marwari words for the word beloved like “Baalam” , “Saahab” and tells him that the clouds are pouring heavily (jhirmir barse megh) and I have put up a “Hindo” , Hindo is a swing which is seen in rural areas and which is used by ladies during the monsoon festival of “Teej”)

Aavan jaavan ro keh gayo kar gayo, kawal anek baalam ji mhaara jhirmir barse megh
(You told me you will come back, you made many false promises and you have lied to me, oh my beloved, the clouds are pouring the heavy rain!)

Likhe likhe kaagadiya dhola jeela, melan babuderi daakh baalam ji mhaara jhirmir barse megh
(You wrote me many letters with promises of coming back, I have waited for you during all this monsoon season)

Bola illibor, jhoombad jhaintan bulo paayo naak bichre
(My nose ring, the ornaments on my forehead, and my ear ornaments, whom can I show all this geting ready ?)

Pagoda polar langar laya
(Whom are you showing your turban(pagoda) so proudly to ?)

Paayal paayi pag bichre kishnapur saari angiyon ope
(I have worn anklets in my feet, I have bought a saari from Kisnapur, but all my getting ready is worthless without your presence. )

Saawan ki yo jhade re baalam ji mhaara jhirmir barse megh
(Oh my beloved, the clouds are pouring the heavy rain! )
