In the enchanting town of Ramnagar, nestled in Karnataka’s cultural heartland, Parthasarthi and his team breathe life into the ancient folk art of Veeragase. This traditional dance-drama, steeped in history and devotion, is a vibrant tribute to the fierce and dynamic avatar of Lord Shiva, known as Veerabhadra. Parthasarthi, with his unwavering passion and dedication, has made it his mission to preserve and promote this art form, ensuring its resonance with future generations.
Veeragase is more than just a performance—it is a spiritual and cultural expression that embodies the valor, energy, and divine wrath of Veerabhadra. Known for its dynamic movements, elaborate costumes, and rhythmic beats, this art form commands the attention of its audience, evoking both awe and reverence.
Parthasarthi leads his team of talented artists in performing Veeragase and Tamtevaadiya—two forms of folk art that demand immense physical and emotional energy. For over 15 years, the team has graced stages across India, performing in places like Delhi, Haryana, Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha. Their performances are not just a display of skill but a heartfelt mission to safeguard this traditional art form from fading into obscurity.
When we arrived to document their performance, the team had already begun their preparations. Clad in shimmering costumes and adorned with intricate masks, they were a vision of tradition and artistry. As the beats of the dhol resonated through the air, the team began their performance with electrifying energy.
Every step, every movement echoed their dedication to the craft. The fierce rhythm of their dance was a testament to the intensity of Veerabhadra’s narrative. It was impossible not to tap along to the infectious beats, drawn into the power and vibrancy of the performance.
Parthasarthi’s journey in Veeragase began under the guidance of esteemed teachers like Byrappa and Mahesh. His learning continued at Janapada Loka, a cultural hub built by Nagegowda to preserve Karnataka’s folk heritage. Here, Parthasarthi honed his skills under the mentorship of stalwarts such as Shivanna and Seenappa.
For Parthasarthi, Veeragase is more than just a profession—it is his life’s purpose. Over the years, he has taught this art in schools and colleges, spreading its essence to younger generations. Institutions like Basaveshwara School, Shyamala School, Channapatna Government First Grade College, and GKVK College in Bengaluru have benefited from his expertise and passion for this craft.
While there are audio and video recordings of their performances, Parthasarthi humbly admits that he is unsure of their whereabouts. Nevertheless, his focus remains steadfast on passing this art form to his children and ensuring its survival through generations.
The journey of preserving Veeragase is not without its challenges. As with many traditional art forms, it faces the threat of being overshadowed by modern entertainment and a lack of widespread recognition. Yet, Parthasarthi and his team continue to persevere, driven by their love for Veeragase and their belief in its cultural significance.
Their performances deserve applause and appreciation from audiences worldwide. Veeragase is not just a regional treasure but a cultural gem that embodies the spirit of India’s rich folk heritage.
As we reflect on our time documenting Parthasarthi and his team, one thing is clear: their work deserves to be celebrated on a global stage. Their dedication to preserving the raw energy and beauty of Veeragase is a powerful reminder of the importance of cultural traditions in shaping our identities.
Veeragase is not just a dance—it is a story, a prayer, and a legacy. By supporting artists like Parthasarthi, we can ensure that this legacy continues to thrive, inspiring and connecting people across generations and geographies.
