In the serene valleys of Himachal Pradesh, where the mountains cradle stories of age-old traditions, Raj Himachali and his group of Nati dancers and musicians bring life to the region’s rich cultural heritage. Inspired by the legendary S.D. Kashyap, Raj has dedicated his life to preserving and promoting Kulluvi Nati, the traditional folk dance of the region, and its accompanying melodies.
Kulluvi Nati, one of the 12 mesmerizing forms of Nati native to Himachal Pradesh, is a celebration of life, love, and community. It is more than just a dance—it’s a story told through graceful movements, vibrant costumes crafted from yak leather and local fabrics, and soulful music. This art form reached global acclaim when over 9,000 women performed it during the International Kullu Dussehra, earning a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. The event, dedicated to empowering women and promoting the government’s “Beti Hai Ammo” (Daughters are Priceless) campaign, became known as “The Pride of Kullu.”
Raj Himachali, whose real name is Mani Ram, has become a central figure in the Nati tradition, weaving modern influences into its timeless fabric while staying true to its essence. His group’s performances are a mesmerizing spectacle, blending the soulful beats of traditional instruments with their unmatched energy and charisma.
Raj Himachali’s vocal prowess is as captivating as his compositions. Known for his ability to mimic voices, including that of the legendary Lata Mangeshkar, his versatility and entertaining stage presence leave audiences in awe. From Taoli to Mujra Taal and Trital, his compositions span a spectrum of styles, showcasing his adaptability and creative genius.
He has also mastered traditional instruments like the Bansuri, Shehnai, Dhol, and Nagada, while expanding his repertoire to include orchestral music. His performances at iconic events like Chamba Minjar Mela, Mandi Shivratri, Shimla Summer Festival, and Kullu Dussehra have made him a celebrated figure in Himachal Pradesh.
Behind the larger-than-life persona of Raj Himachali is a humble, hardworking individual. Born into the Koli community of Kullu, he discovered his passion for music at a young age. Inspired by the legendary S.D. Kashyap, he devoted over a decade to refining his craft, despite the challenges faced by folk musicians in earning a livelihood.
While music is his primary source of income, Raj balances his artistic pursuits with farming to provide for his family. His ten-year-old son and young daughter are his pride, and he dreams of giving them a better life while ensuring that his cultural legacy lives on.
Raj’s ambitions extend far beyond his village. He dreams of performing on global stages, sharing the beauty of Himachal’s folk traditions with the world. “It’s not just about fame,” he says, “but about making my community and state proud.”
Even as Raj Himachali gains recognition through platforms like YouTube, he remains grounded, acknowledging the struggles of folk musicians in today’s world. Yet, his love for music keeps him going. “Music is a gift from God,” he says, “a source of peace and tranquility.”
His dedication to his art and community is evident in the way he nurtures his group, comprising talented dancers and instrumentalists. Together, they create performances that are both entertaining and deeply rooted in tradition.
As our conversation with Raj Himachali drew to a close, he shared one of his soulful compositions, leaving us enchanted:
“Chaand bhi feeka pada sa teri soorata aage ho
(The moon pales in comparison to your face)
Soorta ge ritue teri soorta aage ho
(The moon pales in comparison to your beauty)
Teri ta shobli soorte kai dildu daage ho
(Your beauty has left many hearts scarred)
Dildu daage dildu kai dildu daage ho
(Many hearts bear the mark of your beauty)
Tau bhali sooraj jawula sa taare hausde laage ho
(The sun smiles upon you, and the stars laugh)
Hosde laage rituein taare hasde laage ho
(When the stars see you, they smile, and the sun burns).”*
