Our last day of shooting in Madhya Pradesh took us to Jhirka Bagh Datia, where we were scheduled to record several artists gathered by Vinod Mishra Ji. Little did we know that this would be a very special day, introducing us to the remarkable Haridas Shakya, a 75-year-old Kabirpanthi Sant, whose presence would leave an indelible mark on us. What was intended to be a simple recording session turned into a deeply spiritual experience.

Haridas Ji, affectionately known as Haridas Baba Ji, is a devoted follower of the mystic poet Kabir. His life’s work revolves around singing Kabir Bhajans, songs filled with profound philosophy, wisdom, and spirituality. These songs not only reflect the deep teachings of Kabir but also offer a glimpse into Haridas Ji’s spiritual journey. Upon our arrival, he was introduced to us, and immediately, we felt a sense of calm and peace in his presence. His tranquility made us feel welcome and at ease, clearly reflecting his deeper understanding of the world and the self.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Haridas Ji’s artistic expression was his self-invented instrument, the Chidiya. Although we didn’t get to hear him play it, just knowing he created his own instrument was exciting. The Chidiya represented not only his musical ability but also his innovative spirit, a testament to his passion for music and spirituality. Meeting someone with such creativity and dedication was inspiring and rare.

However, it wasn’t just the instrument that made Haridas Ji remarkable. His music and the way he communicated with his audience were equally powerful. During our time with him, Haridas Ji sang two songs for us, both leaving us deeply moved. The first song, titled “Bana dayi Hai Karigar ne”, reflects on the human body as a creation of God. He emphasizes that while the body is beautifully made, it is temporary. He sings about how we are born, live, and eventually must leave our bodies behind. The song reminded us to appreciate the present moment without becoming overly attached to material things. Life is fleeting, and Haridas Ji’s song urged us to focus on the essence of life.

The second song, “Mukhda Kya Dekhe Darpan Mein”, left an even stronger impression. It addresses the irony of admiring oneself in the mirror without possessing good qualities inside. Haridas Ji teaches that true beauty comes from within. He suggests that our outer appearance doesn’t define us; it’s the goodness and virtues we cultivate on the inside that matter. This song made us reflect on how society often judges based on appearances, forgetting that the true value lies in one’s inner qualities.

The simplicity and depth of both songs were moving. These weren’t just performances to be appreciated for their melody, but spiritual teachings wrapped in music. Listening to Haridas Ji sing was more than just hearing a song—it was an experience that prompted us to reflect on our lives, values, and connections to the world. His songs weren’t mere entertainment; they were lessons in life.

As we sat and listened, we couldn’t help but admire Haridas Ji’s personality. He carried an aura of serenity, wisdom, and peacefulness that was incredibly inspiring. It was clear that his life wasn’t just about singing—it was about spreading messages of spiritual awakening and inner peace. Through his music, he imparted the importance of looking inward and finding peace within. His songs taught us that true happiness and fulfillment come from nurturing goodness, humility, and kindness.

Although we didn’t get the chance to witness Haridas Ji play his Chidiya, just being in his presence and hearing his songs was enough to leave us feeling grateful and inspired. Sometimes, the most profound lessons come in simple forms—a song, a prayer, or a quiet moment of reflection. Haridas Ji’s music transcended the boundaries of language and culture, reaching us on a deeper level. His teachings reminded us that the greatest lessons are often the simplest ones.

Our time with Haridas Ji was more than just another shoot. It was a spiritual journey, one that touched our hearts and left a lasting impact. His music, teachings, and peaceful aura will stay with us for a long time. We left Jhirka Bagh Datia with a sense of fulfillment, feeling deeply connected to the message Haridas Ji embodied—the true spirit of Kabir’s teachings. These teachings remind us that life is fleeting, and that the real beauty of existence lies not in external appearances or material wealth, but in the goodness we nurture within ourselves. Haridas Ji’s life and work are a living testament to this truth, and we are deeply grateful for the opportunity to have crossed paths with such a wise and inspiring soul. His legacy of wisdom and peace will continue to inspire all who encounter his music and teachings.
