SWATI MAHADIK PUNEKAR AND GROUP

Swati Ganesh Mahadik, a 37-year-old Lavani artist from Pune, has dedicated her life to preserving the beauty of this traditional Maharashtrian art form. Her journey began in challenging circumstances—having to leave school after grade 5 due to financial hardships, she supported her family by helping her mother run a tea stall. Swati’s first glimpse of the performing arts came from watching nearby shoots, but it was at the age of 15, when she attended a Lavani performance with her grandmother, that she discovered her true calling.

Her path was not without obstacles. Initially, her family hesitated to accept her interest in Lavani, and even close relatives distanced themselves during her early performances. However, her grandmother stood by her, encouraging her to pursue the art. In 2016, Swati formally entered the Lavani scene, learning the basics from Ashish Desai. Her quick grasp of complicated movements and her natural grace led her to perform at local festivals, where Lavani often stole the spotlight. She gradually established herself as a lead dancer and choreographer, taking on independent performances with a steadfast commitment to preserving Lavani in its purest form.

Swati’s performances are brought to life by a talented group of artists. Vaidehi Jadhav performs Kadhi Lavani with elegance, her vibrant nauvari sari adding a special charm to every move. Sandhya Mane’s soulful singing brings depth to their shows, captivating audiences with her melodious voice. On the dholak, Babasaheb Jadhav sets the rhythm with precision, while Ganesh Mahadik’s harmonium melodies elevate the performances, adding a magical touch to the music.
