SHEELA PANT AND GROUP

Sheela Pant, a 52-year-old artist from Almora, has dedicated her life to the preservation and performance of Kumaoni folk music. Her musical journey began with a passion for film songs, but since 1997, she has focused on folk music, performing on Akashvani Almora and contributing to the rich musical heritage of her region.

Sheela’s repertoire includes traditional forms such as Jhoda, Chanchari, and Nyoli. Her initial training came from her father, a talented singer, and she further developed her skills with guidance from Chandan Bora and the Jaininda Group. Her early exposure to Kumaoni music was facilitated by Trivan Giri Maharaj, who recorded five songs for her, which marked the beginning of her engagement with regional music.

Sheela’s commitment to music extends beyond personal enjoyment. Despite health challenges and household responsibilities, including caring for her husband, son, and daughter-in-law, she remains dedicated to her craft. Her family’s support has been crucial, with her husband and son providing encouragement and practical assistance, allowing her to participate in various programs and performances.

Her musical career has been marked by perseverance and a deep connection to her roots. Although she sometimes faces challenges, such as health issues or lack of recognition, Sheela’s love for singing keeps her motivated. Her performances with Chandan Bora’s group over the past 13 years have allowed her to reach wider audiences and continue sharing her cultural heritage.

Sheela Pant’s journey reflects a deep commitment to preserving and promoting Kumaoni folk music, with her family playing a significant role in supporting her passion.
