Radha Tewari, a 56-year-old artist from Almora, continues to be a dedicated practitioner of traditional Kumaoni folk music. Her musical journey began in her village, but it was only after moving to the city and raising her children that she had the opportunity to return to her passion. Despite the challenges of managing a household and running a tailoring shop, Radha’s love for music remained unwavering.
Radha’s repertoire includes a wide range of traditional forms such as Mangal Geet, Nyoli, Jhoda, Chanchari, Chhapeli, Jagar, and Rajula Malushahi. She performs with traditional instruments like the Hudka, Dholak, and Harmonium, which are integral to the folk music of her region. Her approach to music is deeply rooted in the values and practices of her upbringing, and she strives to preserve the authenticity of these traditions.
Influenced by her Aunt, whom she regards as her guru, Radha has honed her skills by listening and learning from those around her. Her performances are a reflection of the old customs and songs that she believes should be passed down to future generations. For Radha, music is not just an art form but an essential part of life, filling a void and adding meaning to her existence.
Although she primarily performs within her local community and does not travel extensively, Radha’s commitment to keeping her musical heritage alive is evident. Her work embodies a deep respect for the traditions of her region, ensuring that the folk songs of her ancestors continue to resonate through her voice.
