PRAKASH TOOFANI AND GROUP

Prakash Kumar Toofani, from Buxwaha village in Damoh district, Bundelkhand, is a dedicated preserver of Bundeli folk music. Growing up in a family of musicians, Prakash has been immersed in the region’s cultural heritage from a young age. He performs traditional musical forms like Raai, Chaukariya, and Faag, passing down these songs that are integral to Bundeli culture.

Prakash’s deep passion for music was nurtured by his family, particularly his father, uncle, and grandfather, who were all musicians. He learned to write his own lyrics, guided by his songwriter uncle, and practiced on the harmonium, sometimes using tools to unlock it when his uncle wasn’t around. One of the pivotal moments in his musical journey was during a Janmashtami festival, where his harmonium performance left a lasting impression on his father. His favorite musical genre is Bilwari, and he and his group perform at festivals like Navratra, Dussehra, and weddings, with a focus on preserving their cultural heritage rather than seeking financial gain.

Prakash is joined by several talented musicians. Bhagirath Ahirwar, a government teacher, plays the Jheenka. From a musical family, Bhagirath writes his own songs, some of which have been released on cassette. His Jheenka playing provides the rhythmic foundation for the group. Ratiram Vishwakarma, a carpenter, plays the Dholak. Inspired by his father’s devotional songs, Ratiram has over 25 years of musical experience and has performed with prominent artists, bringing his rhythmic expertise to various cultural events and weddings. Hariram Ahirwar, a farmer, plays the Manjeera. Growing up in a musical family, his Manjeera playing adds a bright, melodic percussive element to their performances. Phoolchand Ji plays the Nagariya, a vital drum in Bundeli folk music. He learned the craft from his family, and his steady rhythms are essential to the group’s overall sound.

Though most of the group members are farmers or carpenters, music is an essential part of their lives, providing both passion and supplemental income. They perform locally and travel to other areas, sharing the joy of Bundeli folk music and reinforcing its cultural importance across generations.
