Nisha Yadav, whose real name is Chanda, is a 36-year-old folk artist from Damoh, Madhya Pradesh. A devoted mother of four—two sons and two daughters—she has spent over a decade passionately keeping Bundeli folk music alive through her heartfelt performances.

Music has always been an integral part of Nisha’s life. She recalls her innate passion for singing from childhood, stating, “Andar se hi sangeet ki lagan hai bachpan se.” Growing up, her involvement in bhajan-kirtan within her village laid the foundation for her musical journey. Inspired by her mother, who sang bhajans at home, Nisha began performing at the age of 15 despite having no formal training in music.

She performs traditional Bundeli genres such as Bambuliya, Bhajans, and Gaari, adapting to various occasions. Having never attended school, she balanced her love for music with farming and household responsibilities. Her first public performance occurred when her daughter was eight years old. Encouraged by her husband, who accompanied her to events and stayed for her programs, she began performing at festivals and cultural gatherings across cities like Jabalpur, Chhindwara, Sagar, and even at Akashvani in Bhopal and Chhatarpur.

One of Nisha’s most cherished memories is from a performance in Gotegaon, where her rendition of a Bundeli folk song resonated so deeply with the audience that they gifted her ₹8,000-10,000 in appreciation. Despite her growing recognition, Nisha remains humble and grounded. “Paise ki bhookh nahi hai,” she shares, emphasizing her contentment with a simple and happy life.

Nisha Yadav’s group is not just a regular performance ensemble; it comprises five skilled artists who come together to create a cohesive sound that embodies authentic Bundeli folk. Collaborating with Nisha are Murali Manohar Vishwakarma, Govardhan Sen on Nagariya, Sultan Singh Lodhi on Jhinka, and Chanchal on Dholak. Together, they form a vibrant musical family dedicated to preserving and celebrating their cultural heritage through their art.
