NARAYAN SINGH THAPA AND GROUP

Narayan Singh Thapa, a 62-year-old artist, has devoted his life to the preservation and promotion of traditional folk music from the Kumaon region. Although he did not formally practice classical music, Thapa maintained a rigorous practice routine, focusing on Hudka, Lok Geet, and Dhol, alongside Damua. His musical education stemmed from his family and the rich traditions of his village, where he first encountered the essence of folk music during Holi Melas and local celebrations.

Thapa’s musical journey is deeply rooted in the practices of his ancestors. Growing up, he learned to sing and perform traditional folk songs that were once an integral part of village life. He has a particular affinity for Hudka and Chapeli, which he learned through firsthand experience rather than formal training. His background as a Rajput and his family’s military history, including his grandfather’s and father’s service, have shaped his identity and commitment to his art.

Thapa balances his musical endeavors with family life. He is a retired teacher and receives a pension, which supports his continued involvement in music. His dedication to folk music is evident in his efforts to maintain and advance these traditional forms, often performing with local ensembles and participating in community events.

Thapa’s approach to music emphasizes preserving the authenticity of Lok Geet. He believes in keeping the traditional sounds alive, avoiding modern synthesizers and electronic influences that he feels would detract from the essence of the music. He is particularly passionate about the traditional instruments used in folk performances, such as the Hudka and Dhol, which he sees as essential to maintaining the true spirit of the music.

He also supports the promotion of folk music through various platforms, including YouTube, where he shares his performances and teachings. Thapa has collaborated with other renowned folk artists, including Krishna Mohan Bisht, and has performed at numerous local and regional events. His work in the field of folk music remains a testament to his dedication to preserving and advancing Kumaoni cultural heritage.
