Krishna Mohan Bisht, a venerable 71-year-old artist from the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, has dedicated his life to the art of folk music. Bisht lives a life deeply intertwined with his cultural heritage. A Rajput by caste, he identifies more with the traditional practices of his people than with any specific community.

Bisht’s musical journey began in his youth, driven by a passion for folk music rather than formal affiliations or advanced resources. Initially, he played the Thali in Ramleela performances, which kindled his love for music. His repertoire includes traditional Kumaoni folk songs and tunes learned from local masters like Beer Beechme and Bhair Bagnoaul, reflecting his commitment to preserving and propagating local traditions.

Though he does not belong to any particular musical gharana, Bisht’s practice involves performing and composing traditional songs from the hills. His creative process is informal; he writes and sings songs based on his inspiration and experiences. Despite his deep involvement in music, Bisht has never pursued formal training or educational credentials, relying instead on the guidance of his father and fellow musicians.

Over the years, Bisht has traveled extensively across Kumaon and beyond, including Delhi and Lucknow, performing at various venues and recording for All India Radio and Doordarshan Lucknow. His contributions have often been voluntary, with little emphasis on financial gain, reflecting his devotion to the art rather than material rewards.

Now in his later years, Bisht continues to hold a profound belief in the power of music, seeing it as a divine force that can heal and transcend ordinary experiences. Though he no longer performs as frequently, his commitment to music remains unwavering. He is always ready to share his knowledge with others interested in learning, embodying the spirit of a true artist who sees music as a lifelong journey and a means of connecting with his cultural roots.
