Balasaheb Dawla Maluskar, a 62-year-old Powada artist, found his way into folk music not through lineage but through passion. Growing up, he participated in school gatherings, where he developed a love for Powada’s powerful storytelling. Inspired by legendary performers, he immersed himself in learning the art form under Shahir Kisanraoji Hinge, who not only taught him traditional compositions but also encouraged him to carry the legacy forward.

His breakthrough came during his B.Com years, when his college was invited to perform at Doordarshan. His deep voice and expressive delivery earned immense appreciation, solidifying his resolve to continue his musical journey. In the early years, he balanced his banking job by day and performances by night. But his dedication to folk music remained unwavering. After 12 years, he made the bold decision to leave his job and establish Kala Chhanda, a group dedicated to providing opportunities for folk artists.

Balasaheb does not play instruments, but his expertise in singing, writing, and composing has made him a vital figure in Maharashtra’s folk music scene. Through Kala Chhanda, he also works to spread awareness about government schemes supporting artists, ensuring that folk musicians in remote areas receive the aid they deserve. His contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the Patthe Bapurao Puraskar, Shahir Bhushan Puraskar, and Shahir Ratna Puraskar.

Accompanying him is Rajesh Tamhane, a Taal player and chorus singer from Pune, who has spent over 30 years in Marathi cinema and Lok Kala, having trained under Ranjan Deshpande. Joining them is Prabha Dutta Mahadik, an artist with 40 years of experience in Jagran, Gondhal, Lavani, and Bharud, bringing depth and authenticity to their performances.

Together, this group not only preserves Maharashtra’s folk traditions but also strives to bring them to new audiences. Balasaheb envisions creating experience-based spaces near forts, where history and folk art can come alive, ensuring that the richness of Powada continues to inspire generations to come.
