Haridas Shakya, also known as Haridas Baba Ji, is a devoted performer of Kabir Bhajans. Born in Datia, Haridas Ji’s early life was marked by a deep love for music, which began with listening to his brother’s Bundeli Bhajans and Dehati songs. His brother became his first music teacher, nurturing his passion for singing and shaping his early musical journey.
At the age of 25, Haridas Ji’s life took a significant turn when he met a Kabirpanthi Sant in Gwalior. This encounter introduced him to the spiritual teachings of Kabir, the mystic poet who emphasized the oneness of all beings and the importance of self-realization. Under the Sant’s guidance, Haridas Ji learned to play the Tambura, an essential instrument in spiritual music. Inspired by Kabir’s teachings, Haridas Ji left his family behind and dedicated his life to spirituality and music, performing Kabir Bhajans across India.
Haridas Ji’s songs carry a profound message about the transience of life and the importance of spiritual growth over material pursuits. Through his performances, he encourages listeners to live with kindness, humility, and compassion, reminding them of the temporary nature of the physical world.
In addition to his music, Haridas Ji has a talent for woodworking and crafting, a skill he inherited from his father, who made jute ropes. Over time, he developed a passion for creating beautiful wooden crafts, showcasing his art at various exhibitions.
One of Haridas Ji’s most unique contributions to music is his self-made instrument, the Chidiya. Though not used in all of his performances, it symbolizes his creativity and deep dedication to music.
Later in life, Haridas Ji collaborated with Vinod Mishra Ji, a promoter of folk music, which allowed him to perform before larger audiences. Despite the years of travel and performance, Haridas Ji remains committed to his mission of spreading Kabir’s teachings and living a simple, fulfilling life centered on spirituality.
