Gopal Singh Chamyal, an esteemed artist from the scenic Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, has devoted his life to preserving and showcasing the vibrant traditions of folk music. Married with two daughters, a brother, and three sisters—each of whom is also married—he enjoys the support of his wife, a dedicated social worker, in his artistic pursuits.
Chamyal’s journey into the world of music began with his role as a dancer, where he made his mark through performances of traditional folk forms. His versatility is evident in his mastery of nine different traditional instruments, including the Nagada and Dhol. Although he does not belong to a specific musical gharana, his deep-rooted knowledge of folk and classical music, including raagas like Bhupali and Malkauns, allows him to blend traditional styles in his own distinctive way.
His passion for music was ignited during his participation in NCC camps, where he was exposed to various folk traditions. Over the years, Chamyal has performed across a wide range of venues in India, from Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh to Dharmshala, UP, and Gwalior. His contributions to the field have been recognized with prestigious awards, including a fellowship award from the Government of India and a youth award from the Nehru Centre.Chamyal’s dedication to folk music extends beyond performance; he is also deeply invested in keeping the traditions alive through his own compositions and innovative interpretations. His work with All India Radio has garnered high acclaim, highlighting his ability to elevate folk music to new heights. He remains committed to ensuring that the rich heritage of Kumaoni folk culture continues to thrive, with a heartfelt desire for his legacy to be remembered and celebrated long after he is gone.
