Diwan Singh Kanwal’s musical journey began with performances in Ramleela, where he played significant roles such as Hanuman and Lakshman. His extensive experience includes playback singing for the first Kumaoni film and acting in five Hindi films, showcasing his versatility and dedication to his craft. He has performed across India, from Pondicherry to Bombay and Delhi, and has been recognized as an A-grade singer by Akashvani and Doordarshan for over 35 years.
Despite his success, Diwan Singh Kanwal remains grounded. He retired as a Senior Branch Manager from District Bank Almora, choosing to invest his own resources into his artistic pursuits rather than viewing music as a source of income. His primary motivation is the preservation and promotion of Kumaoni folk traditions, which he believes should be passed down through generations.
Diwan Singh Kanwal’s repertoire includes traditional forms such as Nyoli, Chapeli, and Chanchari. He is also known for his self-composed songs, which hold special value for him. His approach to music is deeply rooted in tradition, yet he remains open to innovation and evolution within the folk genre. He continues to be actively involved in the folk music community, valuing both the art form and its practitioners.
