BHASKAR BHAURYAL AND GROUP

Bhaskar Bhauryal, a 24-year-old artist from Almora, Uttarakhand, is a prominent figure in Kumaoni folk music. With a Master’s degree in Fine Arts, Bhaskar integrates his artistic skills by creating paintings and book covers, while passionately pursuing his musical career. Despite lacking formal training, his deep connection to folk music and dedication have made him a respected artist in his community.

Bhaskar, born into a Rajput family, draws financial support from his father’s military pension and by selling his painting work. His musical journey began with his mother, who sang Chanchari songs and served as his first guru. He attended Navodaya Vidyalaya, which fostered his artistic growth, and learned classical music basics from a companion.

Bhaskar’s repertoire includes various Kumaoni folk forms such as Jagar, Chhapeli, Chanchari, Jhoda, and Hudka Bol. He has performed at notable venues, including a one-and-a-half-hour presentation at the Sangeet Natak Academy. Jagar, a significant form of his musical expression, is traditionally sung by men and requires a deep immersion in the community to master its nuances. Bhaskar also integrates elements of Baul music into his performances, reflecting his belief in transcending regional boundaries.

His songwriting often carries messages of hope and connection, drawing parallels with spiritual traditions like Kabir’s Nirgun songs and Bengal’s Baul music. Bhaskar prefers live performances over studio recordings, finding the latter too demanding.

Bhaskar’s approach to music is both innovative and rooted in tradition. He aims to preserve Kumaoni folk traditions while experimenting with new elements, ensuring that his music remains relevant and emotionally resonant. His dedication to his craft and his cultural heritage continue to inspire and engage audiences.
