Baliram Patel, a 55-year-old folk artist from Khajri Gram, Damoh, embodies the soul of Bundeli music. A graduate in music from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Uttar Pradesh, Baliram’s love for folk music was nurtured by his father, his first guru. Growing up, he watched his father sing and play instruments, absorbing the art that would become his life’s passion.  

With over 40 years of performances, including 36 years as a regular artist with Akashvani Chhatarpur and Bundeli channels, Baliram Ji’s musical journey started in his village, accompanying his father to kirtans and bhajans. Initially playing the Dholak and Harmonium, he soon began singing alongside his father, marking the beginning of a lifelong relationship with Bundeli folk music.   

Baliram Patel’s group is a beautiful tapestry of talent, woven together by a shared love for Bundeli folk music. At 73, Jagdish Patel lends rhythm with his Manjira, drawing on decades of experience and a lifelong passion for music that began in his childhood. 

The team also features Purshottam Pateria, who brings his expertise as a Jhula Vadak. His formal training and dedication have enriched the group’s performances. Adding youthful energy to the team like Om Gupta infuses the ensemble with fresh energy. A skilled Nagadiya player, his seamless and balanced rhythms inspire others from his generation to engage with the folk traditions of Bundelkhand.  

Carrying forward the legacy is 15-year-old Jayesh Patel, Baliram’s youngest son, whose journey in music began at the tender age of four. Representing Bundeli folk music on national platforms, Jayesh embodies the promise of the new generation while staying deeply rooted in tradition. 

Together, the group bridges the gap between the past and the future, blending experience and youthful vigor. With every performance, they breathe life into Bundelkhand’s rich cultural heritage, ensuring it resonates across audiences. Through their songs, they celebrate their roots while paving the way for folk music’s evolution.
