In the picturesque hills of Meghalaya’s West Jaintia region, music flows like the rivers that carve through its lush landscape. Among these vibrant melodies emerged the voice of Amabel Susngi, a 27-year-old powerhouse vocalist. Growing up in a family steeped in music, Amabel discovered her love for singing early, joining her father in church choirs and exploring genres like blues, pop, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, and Khasi folk. Yet, despite her undeniable talent, she often struggled with self-doubt, questioning whether her voice could resonate beyond her small community.

Anahad recognised her potential and provided her with professional recording equipment and a platform to share her music with a broader audience with BackPack Studio. Her songs were released on digital platforms, garnering an overwhelming response. Hearing her music appreciated by listeners far beyond her hometown gave her the confidence she had long lacked.

This newfound belief in her abilities transformed Amabel’s approach to her art. She began experimenting with her sound, blending her Khasi roots with contemporary genres to create something uniquely her own. Her talent and creativity found expression in two bands: Mookhuri, which focuses on folk fusion, and Jollies, a rock ’n’ roll group. These projects allowed her to explore her dual passion for preserving her cultural heritage and pushing musical boundaries.

Amabel’s rising visibility opened doors to larger opportunities. She performed at high-profile national events and was even invited to serve as a panellist at Charcha, an initiative by The/Nudge Institute. Speaking alongside prominent artists and thought leaders validated her growing status as not just a musician but a cultural ambassador. Her presence on such platforms inspired other young artists, particularly women, to believe in their potential.

Today, Amabel’s career is flourishing. She is performing internationally, collaborating with renowned musicians, and working on new projects that continue to merge tradition and modernity. Simultaneously, she is pursuing a Ph.D. in music, demonstrating her commitment to both personal growth and the academic study of her craft.

Through the support of the Anahad Foundation, Amabel found more than just a stage for her music—she found her confidence and purpose. Her journey illustrates the profound impact of mentorship and opportunity, showing how an artist can evolve when given the tools to believe in themselves. Amabel Susngi is now a beacon of inspiration, proving that cultural heritage and contemporary artistry can coexist, creating a powerful narrative that transcends borders and unites audiences worldwide.
