In the lush Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, where tradition intertwines with nature, Banshailang Mukhim stands as a custodian of his community’s rich musical heritage. A multi-talented instrumentalist, Banshailang has mastered traditional instruments like the Duitara, Ksing Shynrang, Ka Bom, and Tangmuri. These iconic sounds of Khasi culture, blended with modern instruments like the guitar and keyboard, create a mesmerizing musical tapestry that reflects both his roots and his innovation.
Banshailang’s journey in music began at home, nurtured by his mother, a teacher and songwriter, who instilled in him a profound love for Khasi traditions. However, despite his immense talent, his career was confined to local performances, with limited financial rewards. He also lacked knowledge about royalties, copyrights, and agreements—crucial tools for protecting his artistry and ensuring fair compensation.
Anahad’s team, captivated by Banshailang’s artistry, not only documented his music but also empowered him with business insights. For the first time, he learned about intellectual property rights, royalties, and the importance of signing agreements to safeguard his work. This knowledge marked a turning point in his career, enabling him to take control of his music and transform it into a sustainable source of income.
Armed with this newfound understanding, Banshailang began signing agreements that clearly outlined his share of royalties. This financial stability allowed him to reinvest in his music and expand his influence. Beyond personal success, he became a mentor, sharing his knowledge with other folk artists in Meghalaya. His efforts helped uplift the community, equipping fellow musicians with the tools to protect their creations and thrive in a competitive industry.
Banshailang’s impact extended to Shlem, a music institution he founded in 2016. Here, he trains 30–40 aspiring musicians, teaching them to blend traditional Khasi sounds with modern techniques. His dedication to nurturing talent has made Shlem a hub for preserving and evolving Khasi music, ensuring that the cultural legacy of the Khasi Hills continues to thrive.
Today, Banshailang’s music resonates far beyond Meghalaya, connecting him with global audiences and earning him accolades for his contributions to cultural preservation. He is not just an artist but a cultural leader, inspiring others to value and protect their heritage. His journey underscores the power of education, mentorship, and advocacy in transforming lives and communities.
Banshailang Mukhim’s story is a testament to the transformative power of knowledge and opportunity. By championing the rights of folk artists and breathing new life into Khasi music, he proves that tradition and innovation can coexist, creating a thriving, sustainable future for cultural heritage. With his leadership, the melodies of the Khasi Hills will continue to enchant and inspire generations to come.
