Champe Khan is a 37-year-old artist from Jaisalmer who has been learning music since the age of 10. He is an expert at playing Dhol as well as Dholak but also knows how to play Kamaicha. His father, Chusbe Khan was also a musician whose expertise lied in playing Kamaicha. He learned to play music from his grandfather, Haider Khan as well as his father. He took inspiration from his father who would play music all the time and was also a successor in a long line for folk artists.
He lives with an elder and a younger brother and also his mother who don’t play music and run a furniture business in Pune in which Champe Khan also lends them a hand, but he believes that the furniture business is not his calling. Even though he likes to help out his family in running the business, he prefers music as his choice of profession. He also has three children one of whom is interested in learning music but works at his brother’s furniture store. The other two children are studying in school currently.
It is not easy for artists like Champe Khan who live in places that experience extreme weather conditions and they only earn a basic income through his music which cannot possibly get his family through the whole month. Despite all these issues, Champe Khan wants to focus on his art form and play music for a living to promote the local culture and contribute towards preserving the folk melodies of the region.
