An artist and a teacher, Vidyasagar Sharma is a hankered for classical music instructor in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. He has the perfect origin story for becoming one of the best music teachers in the state as most of his family members, including his children seem to possess a knack for the art.
Vidyasagar’s father worked in the electricity board for a living but never stopped pursuing his hobby of singing and playing Tabla, which he passed on to both his sons. Also, his mother is a tremendous vocalist. It was only a matter of time before these qualities came to light through their son and eventually their grandson, who has already gained proficiency in playing Tabla as well as Dholak.
He believes in the importance of preserving the local culture through folk music and dancing and likes to compose and play Nati music, focusing more on Sanskar Nati (traditional music mostly played at Himachali weddings) sticking to Mishr Peelu raag (melody used in most Nati songs). He only believes in music that sounds pleasant and relaxing to the ears and doesn’t like western influence on traditional cultural music, especially EDM. He has been called upon to perform in almost every state in India and also overseas, in countries like Russia and Oman. His performance in Chhattisgarh was much appreciated by the audience and he deservingly won a gold medal for it in 2015.
Currently, at the age of 49, his main source of income is teaching but his music has made a huge impact on the revival of folk culture in the state. He yearns to continue down the same path and play an instrumental role in the revival of folk music culture all over the country as well as the world.
