Surjit Khan is Desraj Ji’s son, and he was as young as 12 when he started learning Sarangi from his grandfather. He also masters in Dhad, Tumbi, Algoze, as well as in backing vocals and chorus while singing the various ‘Vaar’ and ‘Kaliyaan’ of Punjabi the folk songs. The ‘Vaar’ and ‘Kaliyaan’ that they sing, require at least two to three singers- it cannot be sung alone by just one singer in a solo manner, especially in Dhad-jatha performances. Lately, many singers have shortened the ‘Kali’ and modified them to be sung by one artist, but the essence of the ‘Kali’ is best depicted by multiple singers singing it in unison, with the second singer catching up the end part of the kali sung by the first singer. The resulting melody is a treat to the ears. Surjit Ji has always encouraged both his sons, to perform with all their heart, and encouraged them to carry forward the family heritage will pride. He, along with his father and sons, has made all possible efforts to make the group achieve great heights. His in-depth knowledge about the Punjabi folk music has earned him a great deal of respect in the folk music community in Punjab.
