Sawai Khan is a 36-year-old folk musician from Boruda village of Jaisalmer district in Rajasthan. He has been learning and playing music since his early childhood years. He developed incredible talent in playing musical instruments such as Dholak, Dhol, Khartal, and Harmonium. Apart from these instruments, he has also learned vocal with the help of classical music. He also started learning about the ragas and taals involved within the classical music spectrum such as Mada, Subh, and Bhairavi. He believes in playing all the ragas based on the time of the day and considers Subh as his favorite raga which is playing during the morning time.
They have the support of Royal families of Rajasthan as well such as the Bhati family of Senawaran near Pokhran. This relationship of the Manganiyar group and their patrons represents a long history of deep connections between the Rajputs and the Manganiyars. Manganiyars always play music at every auspicious occasion for the Rajputs such as wedding ceremonies and festivals.
Along with his group of singers and instrumentalists, Sawai Khan performs everywhere in Rajasthan as well as takes the opportunities to perform all over the country. He aspires to play an instrumental role in creating awareness about his culture’s musical expertise around the world and make a substantial impact in the process of setting his community on a path to prosperity.
