Gulam is an artist in the folk music spectrum of Rajasthan. He belongs to the Manganiyar community which has a history of passing on their musical talents down to future generations. Gulam hails from Khelana village of Jaisalmer district.
Gulam has been learning music since the age of 15 and began to learn from his father, Pathaan Khan. Most people in this community begin learning music as a child and master more than one traditional instrument during their lifetime. Similarly, Gulam started learning music with the help of Dholak, Morchang, and Khartal now mastered Dholak. Along with the group of musicians lead by Haape Khan he has performed in almost all districts of Rajasthan.
Due to a lack of financial growth in the field of folk music within the state and the country, these artists have to look for other jobs in order to earn a livelihood for their families. Currently, at the age of 35, Gulam aspires to make an impact on the livelihoods of the people in the community through his craft through more opportunities to showcase the art form he is inordinately passionate about.
